Why don't americans approve of atheist?

Well this country was started by christians even though it wasn't started for religious purposes. the biggest religious group in America are protestant christians. If you go down south(bible belt south not all of the south) the bible is everywhere and bigotry is high. These people down there cant accept others who are different. They fear that they would lose power if different philosophies become popular. Notice every president was a christian.
