Christians: why do you pick and choose what you believe in the bible? Why is that ok?

There was Christianity before the Bible was written, so I don't believe it is based solely on the Bible. You don't need a Bible to believe in Christ. Jona surviving in the fish is the least important detail of that story. The flood is the least important detail of that story. It's understanding the story and our relationship with God.
