What does "as the indictment put it" mean in the sentence?

The "devoted family man" quotation is how it was written in the indictment. It's not ideal because an indictment can't "put" (that is, word or phrase) anything. Rather, the people who wrote it chose the wording. "As it was put in the indictment" might be better.
